Abstract

It is demonstrated with experiments and theory that the performance of an axial flow pump can be described very accurately by application of two-dimensional cascade theories including the thickness effect of the blades on the flows. The blade thickness is found to be an important parameter which is mainly responsible for discrepancies between the experimental results and predictions of "thin airfoil" cascade theories. Three-dimensional effects and the effect of the boundary-displacement thickness on the cascade flow are shown to be negligible for the case of the axial flow pump of high stagger angle and low aspect ratio, which was the case for the present work.
