Prediction of bubble velocity in a Hele–Shaw cell: Thin film and contact angle effects

Abstract

The effect of the thin film between a bubble of a less viscous fluid and the transverse walls on the velocity of steady propagation of the bubble is explored. The estimates suggest that the film corrections for small capillary number cannot account for the large discrepancy between the experimentally observed [Phys. Fluids 31, 18 (1988)] bubble velocities and the theoretical values based on a simplified theory. However, if the thin film is ignored and it is assumed that the contact angle between the interface and the plate varies at different points of the interface in some prescribed manner, then it is possible to account in a qualitative way for the small bubble velocities in the Kopf-Sill–Homsy experiment.
