Comparing electronic databases: How many are enough?

  • 1. ROR icon California Institute of Technology

Abstract

Increasing subscription costs for access to electronic versions of bibliographic databases are forcing academic librarians to re-evaluate the needs of their faculty and students. This is particularly true for research universities that must provide opportunities for conducting comprehensive literature searches. In contrast with 'quick & dirty' searches, designed to find a few relevant articles for a student essay, comprehensive literature searches are critically dependent on database selection.
