The Pb²⁰⁷/Pb²⁰⁶ ages of some stone meteorites

Abstract

The isotopic compositions have been determined for the leads isolated from three stone meteorites. Based upon certain assumptions, Pb²⁰⁷/Pb²⁰⁶ ages of about 4.5 × 10⁹ years are calculated for the meteorites. The lead data indicate that the concentrations of uranium should be about 0.1 p.p.m. and the concentrations of thorium should be about 0.5 p.p.m. in stone meteorites.

TILTON of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution of Washington, who have co-operated closely in this work. The isotopic analyses were determined in INGHRAM's laboratory at The Argonne National Laboratory. TILTON has improved the procedure for the determination of the isotopic composition of lead by introducing the use of lead sulphide on tantalum filaments. All isotopic analyses were made using this modified procedure. Work at the California. Institute of Technology was supported by AEC Contract AT(11-1)-208.
