A comparative study of equilibrium approaches to the chemical characterization of secondary aerosols

Abstract

This paper presents an equilibrium model for prediction of the mass and chemical composition of atmospheric aerosols containing sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, and water. The Model for an Aerosol Reacting System (MARS) is particularly intended for incorporation into larger air quality, visibility, or aerosol dynamics models. Computational efficiency, in addition to satisfactory performance, is an important consideration in such applications. The predictions of MARS agree with those of two comprehensive models currently available. However, the computational efficiency of MARS is shown to be substantially greater than that of the other two models.
