Abstract

Mr. President. Members of the Geochemical Society and Guests: It is my privilege and great pleasure to introduce this year's recipient of the Goldschmidt Medal, the highest award given by the Geochemical Society. He is Gerald J. Wasserburg, my good friend for the past 30 years and a colleague at the California institute of Technology for the past 23 years. I first met Jerry in Urey's laboratory at the University of Chicago. He was a student trying to earn some money by helping out in the laboratory. I was his supervisor and consequently I had many opportunities to interact with him. It was fun to talk with him. He had a good sense of humor. He was bright, knowledgeable and full of good ideas. I learned a great deal from our conversations. Even at that time his deep love for science stood out.
