Abstract
The solubility of SiO₂ in supercritical H₂O as a function of pressure is discussed a dilute solutionlin a regular lattice gas. It is shown that the reaction SiO₂ + 2H₂O = Si(OH)₄ is compatible with the experimental data from 0.3 to 2 kilobars pressure. It is shown that a simple power law, x = f(T)pⁿ should not in general obtain for solutions in the neighborhood of the critical point. An expression is given for the fugacity of solutes as a function of pressure in terms of certain structural parameters and the equation of state of the solvent.

This work was initiated while the author was a visiting investigator at the Institute for Geophysics, University of California (Los Angeles). California Institute of Technology contribution no. 864. The author would like to acknowledge the hospitality of the staff of the Institute of Geophysics while he was a guest in Dr. G. Kennedy's laboratories. The author is particularly indebted to Dr. G. M. Nazarian for his interest in the work and the valuable suggestions which he made. Discussions with Drs. R. Feynman, W. B. Ray, W. Holzer, and Celeste Engel, et al. contributed a good deal to the author's thoughts. Many of the calculations were carried out by Mrs. Dorothy Settle, whose careful efforts are greatly appreciated. This work was supported by a Sloan Foundation Fellowship and a grant from the National Science Foundation.Additional details
