Geology, Mining, And Uses Of Strategic Pegmatites

Abstract

Such minerals as beryl, lepidolite, sheet muscovite, spodumene, and tantatlite-columbite are obtained chiefly from pegmatite bodies that are internally zoned. As shown by examples of such pegmatites from the Southwestern and Southeastern States during World War II, studies of their internal and external structure have value in prospecting and the planning of exploration, development, and mining.

Additional Information

Many problems were discussed in the field with H. M. Bannerman, E. N. Cameron, James Gilluly, and W. T. Schaller of the Geological Survey, C. E. Hunter of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and W. J. Alexander, L.A. Norman, Jr., and E. J. Wemlinger of the Colonial Mica Corp. Their helpful ideas and suggestions are gratefully acknowledged. Numerous office conferences and exchanges of information with Survey colleagues who were investigating similar deposits in other parts of the country also led to a fuller development of many general concepts and conclusions. The contributions of E. N. Cameron, J. B. Hanley, E. W. Heinrich, A. H. McNair, J. C. Olson, J. M. Parker III, and L. R. Page were particularly significant in this connection. C. S. Ross and W. T. Schaller drew generously upon their experience in previous pegmatite investigations, and provided much information and helpful criticism. The manuscript was reviewed by H. M. Bannerman, E. N. Cameron, and James Gilluly of the Geological Survey. Frances H. Jahns and Florence Wiltse gave able assistance in preparing the paper, and Joan T. Rounds drafted several of the illustrations.
