Abstract
The Mount Toby quadrangle embraces an area of 55 square miles that lies mainly within the Connecticut Valley province of central western Massachusetts. The eastern and northeastern parts of the quadrangle, however, lie in the Worcester County Plateau or Central Uplands province, a region of rolling hills underlain by igneous and metamorphic rocks of Paleozoic age. Rocks of this type occur along the eastern edge of the quadrangle and, at the north, underlie such eminences as Ingraham Hill, Ryans Hills, and Joshua Hill. West of the Connecticut Valley, and beyond the limits of the quadrangle, is the Berkshire Hills province, a deeply dissected plateau underlain by other crystalline rocks.
