The Geology of Crater Lake National Park [Book Review]

Abstract

As is well known, the death throes of Mt. Mazama, ancestor of Crater Lake, provided the scenic West with an unrivaled jewel, but, as is not so well known, they also provided an unrivaled section of the internal structure of a volcano. To all who are interested in volcanoes it must seem a fortunate coincidence indeed that within the same twelvemonth scientists of the North American continent should have been favored with an unequaled opportunity to study the birth throes of a volcano in the eruption of Paricutin (see below) and with the appearance of a definitive, quite possibly the definitive, study of the death throes of a volcano, Howel Williams' "The Geology of Crater Lake National Park, Oregon" (Carnegie Instn. Publ. 540, 1942).
