Two New Eocene Rodents from California

Abstract

One of the most common types of mammal obtained by the California Institute of Technology in quarry 249 in the Poway conglomerate, San Diego County, is a new species of the genus Sciuravus. The fauna of quarry 249 is apparently slightly post-Bridger, and hence the presence of this species is of especial interest since remains of Sciuravus younger than of Bridger age have hitherto been rare. The second form described is from the later Eocene of the Sespe formation exposed in the Brea Canyon section of the formation north of Simi Valley, Ventura County. A rodent of uncertain affinities, it is of interest because of its possible relation to the geomyoids.
