Gamma-Ray imaging with germanium planar arrays

Abstract

A program is under way at JPL to develop position-sensitive germanium planar array detectors which will enable instrumentation capable of fine gamma-ray imaging combined with high-resolution spectroscopy. Diode arrays have been fabricated and tested and a number of junction and surface passivation techniques have been investigated with good results. Our goal is to build planar arrays with a position-resolution of 2 mm or better in two dimensions. When used with a coded aperture at a distance of several meters, arcminute imaging will be achieved. We envision employing large mosaics of these sensors in both balloon and satellite experiments.
