S-Layer Similarity in Matrix and Mineral Structure of a Leptotrix Species (Bacteria)

Abstract

The uniquely shaped mineral coat reported in the literature for a Leptotrix species [1] is shown to have an organic matrix with an identical morphology. The same structural design is found among the crystalline cell surface layers of many bacteria. Hence presentation of the Leptotrix data is prefaced by pertinent information on similarly shaped crystalline surface layers.

Additional Information

© Springer-Verlag Tokyo 1991. Drs. D. and S. Caldwell made available the blocks of the embedded Leptotrix specimens used in their original study. Dr. S. Caldwell also attempted to collect for me additional specimens of this species from the Carlsbad Cavern pool. Dr. Z. Mason obtained the TEM micrographs of the Leptotrix material presented in this study. Contribution No. 4933 of the Division of Geological and Planetary Sciences, California Institute of Technology.
