Desorption of Condensed Gases and Organic Molecules by Electronic Processes

Abstract
It has been demonstrated that condensed gases and heavy organic molecules are desorbed very efficiently by energetic charged particles. This occurs even at high velocities where the particle loses energy in the material by its interaction with atomic electronso Although there are a variety of effects observed, the overall pattern that has emerged shows many similarities for electronic excitation erosion in dielectric solids, condensed gases, and organic materials. This paper emphasizes these similarities in the belief that there may be a common underlying desorption mechanism.
