The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database

Abstract

The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) is a research tool in the form of a central archive which accumulates published data, is organized for fast, flexible retrieval, and is accessible to all astronomers. This service was designed in response to an increasing need driven by ever larger data sets collected in surveys, by the exponential growth in the volume of the technical literature, and by a greater tendency among astronomers to take a multi-spectral approach to the study of astrophysical problems.

Additional Information

© Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 1991. Many people have contributed to NED, and continue to do so; we would like to thank Nian Chiu, Rick Ebert, Alan Mazer, and Maneesh Sahani for their help in the software arena; April Michel, Walter Rice and Carol Lonsdale for help with populating the database; and especially Rosanne Hernandez and Eve Scholey for their dedication to digitizing the abstracts, and John Good for his advice and suggestions. We especially acknowledge the friendly collaboration of the SIMBAD project, Centre de Donnees astronomiques de Strasbourg. We would also like to thank all the authors who send us computer-legible versions of their data or catalogs. NED is funded by the Science Operations Branch of the Astrophysics Division, Office of Space Science and Applications, NASA. This work was carried out by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
