Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies in the W Cloud of Virgo

Abstract

As part of our study of Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies in the Virgo Cluster (Hoffman et al. 1988), we have examined how location in the Cluster affects the properties of these objects. For a source list, we used the Virgo Cluster Catalog by Binggeli, Sandage, and Tammann (1987), which contains 64 objects classified as "BCD" with varying degrees of uncertainty. A neutral hydrogen survey at Arecibo and a subsequent spectroscopic survey with the Palomar 5-meter reflector (in addition to other sources), have yielded 35 detections at heliocentric redshift V_⊙ < 3000 km s⁻¹, and 26 in the background (Hoffman et al. 1987, Helou and Schombert 1988, Schulte-Ladbeck and Cardelli 1987), leaving only three objects with unknown redshifts.
