Marine Cycle of Erosion for a Steeply Sloping Shoreline of Emergence

Abstract

Studies of shoreline physiography in the vicinity of Ventura, California, demonstrate a need for recognition of an erosion cycle for steeply sloping shorelines of emergence. No offshore bars have developed on this or many other emerged portions of the California coast. Their existence depends on a sea floor of gentle gradient. A steeply sloping emergent shoreline progresses through a distinct cycle which conforms to, but differs from, those previously described for submerged and gently sloping emerged shorelines.
