Additional Information

My indebtedness to the Condon Lecture Committee and to those associated with its function is great. Not only have they provided occasions on which to speak about glaciers to highly appreciative audiences, but they have furnished opportunity, one might even say forced me, to set down some of these matters on paper. Delightful hospitality was extended on all sides, and the contact with the people of Oregon was pleasant, stimulating and educational. The State has done a good thing in establishing the Condon Lectureship, and its citizens can take pride in this function. Professor Donald B. Lawrence, the lecturer originally scheduled for 1960, could not participate owing to unfortunate illness, and it is proper that he be saluted here with warm hopes for a rapid recovery. The discerning reader will quickly realize that I am indebted to a host of able field associates and scientific colleagues who have participated in these researches. Many of their names do or will appear in scientific bibliographies on glaciers, along with other investigators upon whose work I have drawn without the recognition usually accorded by specific citation. Photographs borrowed from other are acknowledged individually. Purposely, I refrain from naming individuals in this acknowledgment. Those to whom these words of warm appreciation are directed will recognize that fact. However, I cannot say "thank you" properly without turning specifically to Dr. L. S. Cressman, Chairman of the Condon Lecture Committee. He and his fellow committee members do a superb job.
