Nanomechanical Systems: Applications in Biotechnology

Abstract

Nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) offer important new prospects for ultrasensitive chemical and biological measurements. In my talk I will describe two specific applications of NEMS that we are pursuing: vacuum-based mass spectrometry and fluid-based chemical force assays. In both of these arenas ultraminiature mechanical devices offer intriguing new functionality the single-molecule limit.
