Abstract
In just a little more than a decade the Josephson effect) has evolved from the status of a concept in theoretical physics to an officially adopted technique for maintaining international voltage standards.) This rapid development reflects the very fundamental importance of Josephson's discovery for which he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973. Many other applications of Josephson's discovery have been carried out in the general area of unique and sensitive quantum-electronic devices. The intent of this paper is to present a summary of some of this development, with special emphasis on the Standards application to experts unfamiliar with superconducting phenomena.
