Parallel processing with attached processors in a computer center environment

Abstract

The 3 collaboration at CERN is constructing LEPICS, the L3 parallel integrated computing system, to meet the CERN site off-line computing needs of the L3 experiment. LEPICS consist of an IBM 3090-180E host computer, and a heterogenous selection of attached processors with a total CPU power of several times that of the 3090-180E. The attached processors are linked to the host through high-speed VME to IBM channel interfaces. A "joint study" has been started between L3 and IBM to determine the suitability of IBM's Parallel FORTRAN environent in conjunction with attached processors, and to develop software to manage the attached processor resources automatically and dynamically. This paper comments on the evaluation of attached processors for LEPICS, and describes the project currently under way for their software integration with the host computer.
