Quantum dynamics of the D = 3 abelian Higgs model and spontaneous breaking of parity

Abstract

Several D=3 gauge models where the macroscopic Chern-Simons (CS) terms is induced via scalar fields are described. The first is the usual abelian Higgs model where, as shown by Khlebnikov, there is a non-trivial one-loop correction to the tree-level CS coupling. A refined treatment of this model based on the one-loop effective potential is given. Other models include fermions and the fermion-(pseudo) scalar interaction but no tree-level CS term. In all cases the central point for spontaneous parity breaking is the formation of non-zero (pseudo) scalar field condensates.
