Abstract
What is growth and development in the context of plants? To the botanist, it is the endless variation in shape and form; to the farmer, it is yield; to the geneticist, it is the identification of gene function. In the past few years, plant scientists have taken great leaps in identifying genes that function in discrete pathways of growth and development. This launch issue celebrates a time when we are still able to keep up with the information in plant development, but find new surprises each month in the literature. Hopefully, genetic analyses such as those discussed in this issue will lead to answers for the botanist and someday improve yields for the farmer.
