The TAU Lepton and its Neutrino

Abstract

The τ lepton has been studied extensively since its discovery in 1975 (1), in the process e+e- → τ+τ- → e±µ∓ missing energy. It is the heaviest known lepton, and the only one that includes hadrons in its decay products. In the Standard Model, the τ and its associated neutrino form a weak doublet and belong to the third and perhaps last family of leptons and quarks.

Perl. We also thank M. Davier and K. K. Gan for hosting two very successful Workshops on Tau Lepton Physics that brought together aspects of τ physics from a variety of different fields. Finally, we thank J. Urheim and K. R. Schubert for a careful reading of this manuscript and for many helpful suggestions.
