Abstract
It is suggested that spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, occuring prior to confinement, accounts for the successes of the non-relativistic quark model and quenched fermion Monte Carlo calculations. The validity and shortcomings of the latter are discussed, particularly with respect to glueballs and flavor-neutral mesons.
