Abstract
Using phase-coherent optical multiple-pulse spectroscopy, we report the measurement of phase- and energy-changing collisional cross sections in I_2 gas. We obtained the following cross sections: σ = 590 ± 110 Å^2 and σ_(energy) = 227 ± 12 Å 2. At 30 m Torr. 40% of the homogeneous is due to phase-changing collisions, and the total linewidth therefore does not give the lifetime directly.
