Final geological journeys

Abstract

After the hammering which we and the dogs had taken while we were trying to travel and do useful work along the edge of the ice-sheet in March 1953, I decided that rather than return to the climatic battle zone between the ice-sheet and the mountains, we could more profitably spend the first part of the season travelling across Storstrømmen to extend our work eastwards through the coastal mountains. I will not dwell on the conditions of Storstrømmen, because this barrier has been adequately described elsewhere. For two reasons we hoped that the crossing might not be too difficult. First, there had been an unusually heavy snowfall in the winter and, secondly, Angus with his dog team was working with me so that we could divide our loads between two sledges.
