Abstract
It is often said it is easy to have hindsight, but it is rather a special event when a man of great foresight gives us his hindsight in the autumn of his illustrious career. A. H. Sturtevant is as much a part of modern genetics as any man and he has put his powers of analysis and synthesis to the task of understanding the sequence of ideas and discoveries of genetics. The result is an exceptionally clear and profound understanding of the greatest developments in biology in this century.
