Abstract
We report a theoretical study of angle-resolved photoelectron spectra (ARPES) for the oriented, linear triatomic NiN_2. This study was motivated by the work of Horn et al. (Surface Sci. 118 (1982) 465 ), who studied ARPES spectra from N2 adsorbed on Ni[110] and observed a resonance feature in the 2σ_u cross section which is not present in the gas phase N_2 spectra. We confirm that this feature could be a result of symmetry breaking of the homonuclear N_2 orbitals by the surface. However, in this case we find that surface reflection of the emitted electrons cannot be ignored in interpretation of the experimental data.
