Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of natural rubber latex

Abstract

The ^(13)C relaxation times (T_1)of the carbons in a sample of rubber latex have been measured for the purpose of determining the practicality of measuring the rubber content from the integrated intensities of the FT NMR ^(13)C resonances without need for using gated decoupling or paramagnetic relaxation agents. The carbon T_l values were found to range from 610 ms (tertiary carbon) to 44 ms for the CH_2 attached to the CH_3-C = carbon of the double bond. These relaxation times are short enough to allow for easy quantitative analyses of the rubber content in a latex, provided the FT pulsing rates are not too fast.
