C_4H_7^+ A Chemical Chimera

Abstract

I am deeply indebted to the Welch Foundation and its advisors for the opportunity to address you today. Before beginning, l should mention that there were two different letters from the Foundation with directions for my talk. One directed me to speak about my research, or the role of chemistry for the betterment of humanity. The other letter's mandate was to speak about my research for the role of chemistry in the betterment of humanity. I hope for your indulgence in following the first suggestion, the one with the or.

Brittain, M. E. Squillacote. Again, let me single out Bob Mazur for his special contributions in clearly defining what problems we needed to solve to understand the structure of C_4H_7^+. Finally, I would like to express my appreciation for the agencies that have so generously supported our research in this area for the 45 years that we have been involved: Laboratory for Nuclear Science & Engineering (MIT), Petroleum Research Fund of the American Chemical Society, the National Science Foundation and especially to the California Institute of Technology, which has offered a wonderfully stimulating and supportive scientific home for me over the last 37 years.
