Electronic excitation of CH_4 by low-energy electron impact
Chicago
Abstract
We report cross sections for excitation of the (1t_2→3sa_1) singlet and triplet states of methane by low‐energy electron impact. The cross sections for these dissociative states were obtained using the Schwinger multichannel variational method with up to seven channels (three physical states) coupled. Aspects of the convergence with respect to channel coupling are discussed. A preliminary comparison with the recently measured CH_2 fragment production cross section [T. Nakano, H. Toyoda, and H. Sugai, Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 30, 2912 (1991)] shows fair agreement.
