Abstract
Fluorine magnetic resonance spectroscopy has been used to determine the rates of ring inversion of y,y-difluoro-є-caprolactone and y,y-difluoro-є-waprolactam. Free energies of activation of 10.0 and 10.4 kcal/mol at - 53º were found for the lactone and lactam, respectively. The nmr spectra for both compounds were best interpreted in terms of the chair conformation.
