Abstract
The Hammett equation has been shown to be applicable to the reactivities of a series of 4- and 5-substituted 2-methyl-benzoic acids. The results may be interpreted as indicating that the steric effect of an ortho-group on the reactivity of the carboxyl group of benzoic acid can be independent of other substituent groups which might be present.
