Alpha capture on ^(14)C and its astrophysical implications

Abstract

The reaction ^(14)C(α, γ)^(18)O has been measured in the alpha energy range of E_α = 1.14−2.33 MeV. The resonance strengths of the 4^+ resonance at E_α = 1.14 MeV and of the 1^− resonance at E_α = 1.79 MeV have been measured relative to the ^(14)C(p, γ)^(15)N resonance at E_p=0.528 MeV. Additionally, two nonresonant γ-transitions to the ground state and to the first excited state of ^(18)O were found. The energy dependence of their cross sections can be described by the direct capture process and its interference with the two 1^− resonances at E_α = 1.79 and 2.33 MeV.
