A direct determination of the energy release for the 3α breakup of the second-excited state of ^(12)C

Abstract

The energy difference between the second-excited state of ^(12)C and three α-particles has been determined by implanting ^(12)B ions within a silicon surface-barrier detector, and observing the pulses from the 3α decay of the second-excited state of ^(12)C, formed in ≈ 1.5% of the ^(12)B decays. The result obtained, Q = 379.6 ± 2.0 keV is in good agreement with that obtained by measuring the excitation energy of the ^(12)C second-excited state and then subtracting three times the mass excess of an α-particle. The combined result from the present work and three recent excitation measurements is Q = 380.1 ± 1.1 keV.
