Vacuum pyrolysis of furfural: a facile synthesis of vinylketene

Abstract

The thermal unimolecular decomposition of 2-furaldehyde (FA) has been investigated in a low pressure flow reactor above 1050 K by product trapping followed by pressure measurements, IR identification and quantitative chemical analysis. It is shown that under these conditions FA losses CO leading to the formation of vinylketene, CH_2=CH-CH=C=O, as a primary product. Further decarbonylation to C_3-hydrocarbons takes over at higher temperatures. The extent of FA decomposition as well as the yield of vinylketene as functions of temperature are also reported.
