Abstract
It is shown that the fragmentation pattern of n-C_8H^+_(18) produced by low-energy electron impact ionization in a modulated beam mass spectrometer is a sensitive function of the initial gas temperature. Under these conditions, mass spectrometry lends itself quite generally to the study of energy deposition and exchange in processes involving polyatomics.
