Abstract
A year before it has fully completed its first 10-metre telescope, billed as the largest in the world, the W. M. Keck Foundation has decided to fund a second, identical telescope only 80 metres away. But this is no sign of mere profligacy. Rather the idea is to take advantage of modem optics to use the two together as an infrared and optical interferometer to give astronomical images of unprecedented quality.
