A prudent path forward for genomic engineering and germline gene modification

Abstract

A framework for open discourse on the use of CRISPR-Cas9 technology to manipulate the human genome is urgently needed.

G.C. is an inventor on patents filed by Harvard University that cover the use of Cas9 in human cells, and reduction in off-target activity. J.A.D. is an inventor on patents filed by the University of California for research and development on CRISPR-Cas9–mediated genome engineering. J.S.W. is an inventor on patents filed by the University of California, San Francisco, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, that cover CRISPR screening technology.
