Abstract
The seismic moment of the 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake is determined to be 6 x 10^(18) N·m (that is, M_w=6.5) from long-period Love and Rayleigh waves. The ratio of local magnitude M_L, to M_W for the event is 1.02, significantly larger than the value 0.90 for the 1940 Imperial Valley earthquake.
