Abstract
The velocity of longitudinal waves in the earth increases with depth down to the core, at a depth of about 2,900 km., where there is a discontinuous drop from 13·7 km. to about 8 km. per sec. Within the core, the velocity has usually been calculated as increasing gradually to about 11·5 km. per sec. at the centre.
