Unexplained phases in seismograms

Abstract

The first period in the investigation of earthquake waves propagated through the interior of the earth ended when times and amplitudes of all major phases in records had been explained on the basis of two curves, one giving the velocity of longitudinal waves as a function of depth throughout the earth, the other the velocity of transverse waves between the surface and the core. This research is now in its second phase, in which relatively small deviations in observed times, unexpectedly large or small amplitudes, multiplicity in phases, unexplained phases and other unexpected features of seismograms are the subject of investigations.
