C-H bond activation at Pt(II): A route to selective alkane oxidation

Abstract

Activation of C-H bonds by Pt(ll) complexes under mild conditions has been demonstrated in a number of stoichiometric examples. It has also been implicated in alkane oxidations catalyzed by Pt(ll), although no practical application has yet been achieved. An effective process for selective oxidation of alkanes requires optimization of C-H activation as well as its integration with several more key steps that add up to an overall catalytic system. I will report on recent investigations into the mechanism of C-H activation at Pt(ll) aimed ultimately at elucidating the features required to accomplish that goal.
