Texture and microstructural development in gelcast barium hexaferrite

Abstract

The development of texture in barium hexaferrite by templated grain growth was studied as a function of the Fe_2O_3/BaCO_3 ratio, B_2O_3 additions in the starting materials, and sintering temperature. A magnetic field was used to orient the template particles during the gelcasting process. Excess BaCO_3 resulted in abnormal grain growth and maximized texture, while B_2O_3 additions promoted coarsening, but no abnormal grain growth.
