Conceptual Design of Submarine Outfalls - I: Jet Diffusion

Abstract

Effective utilization of the ocean for natural purification of sewage effluent depends on good jet mixing and oceanic convection and diffusion. Important factors are ocean currents, density stratification, bacterial die off, and the use of multiple-jet diffusers.

These notes have been prepared for the Water Resources Engineering Educational Series, Program VII, "Pollution of Coastal and Estuarine Waters," University Extension and the College of Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, Jan. 28-30, 1970. Some of the research results given here have been developed at the W. M. Keck Laboratory of Hydraulics and Water Resources, California Institute of Technology, with support of the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, Dept. of Interior, Grant No. 16070 DGY, and predecessor grants.
