The composition of the lower mantle

An error occurred while generating the citation.

Abstract

The equation of state of the lower mantle is found by requiring that both the density and the seismic parameter ∅ = (∂P / ∂P_s = V ^2-(4/3)V^2_s be satisfied. The zer the lower mantle can then be found and the mean atomic weight can be inferred. For most published density models for the Earth the FeO content of the lower mantle is greater than the upper mantle. This indicates that the mantle is not homogeneous in composition as is usually assumed.
