Theory of the Earth's Interior [Book Review]

Abstract

In spite of its title, this is not a book about the theory of the Earth's interior. It is a book that would be better entitled Partial Differential Equations of Geophysics. The four chapters in this small book cover: 1) vector and tensor analysis; 2) fundamental equations of elasticity; viscosity and electro-magnetic theory; 3) theory of elasticity; 4) theory of viscous flow and electromagnetic theory. Although geophysical problems guided the author in his selection of topics, he very seldom makes direct reference to the Earth. This book will serve primarily as a useful source book for some of the equations of mathematical geophysics. In both its style and subject content it is more a handbook than a text, although it should be a useful supplementary reference for courses in advanced geophysics.
