Introduction to the Special Issue
Abstract
We are pleased to bring you this month a Special Issue entirely on THz Metamaterials and Applications. Although only a decade old, Metamaterials has become an increasingly mature research topic as useful real-life applications begin to emerge. Although the subject spans wavelengths from microwaves to visible light, the terahertz range has a particularly well-suited length scale for the photolithographic construction of both meta-surfaces and 3-D bulk metamaterials. At the same time, metamaterials are being employed in the realization of devices with highly improved, and in many cases, completely new physical properties. The aim of this special issue is to focus on the merger of metamaterials and terahertz devices and applications. Both general interest review articles, as well as new contributions highlighting state-of-the-art developments, were solicited. We received more than 25 manuscripts covering a fairly wide variety of topics and including both regular and select Invited contributions.
