Abstract
A concise review of the status of research on short-lived nuclei is presented. The importance of these nuclei is very great in spite of the fact that they are essentially absent today (except for cosmic ray products). The significance of these nuclei for understanding broader cosmic problems is outlined and it is shown that they are a key to the earliest processes in solar system formation and possibly provide a link with pre solar processes in the interstellar medium or of intense activity of the early sun. A few reminiscences are about some random interactions with Hans Suess are given illustrating different ways of doing and thinking science.
